Annual Fundraising Events
Birds for Books is held during the month of April to get the best look at the spring migration. The event brings kids and grownups outdoors, counting birds and creating a species list. Donors pledge an amount of money per species counted.
BBQ for Books was first held in October, 2017 at the beautiful Broadwing Farm. In 2020, during the pandemic, the in person event was canceled, so they put together a virtual livestream with interviews and performances from local artists and musicians. Read an article about this special livestream event and how it was organized here. You may watch the show anytime here. In 2023, the fundraiser changed to an annual celebration of the Hot Springs Library.
An Inspiring Story of Community
The Hot Springs Library had been housed in various buildings in or near downtown Hot Springs, most recently the old Forest Service Building on Bridge Street. That building was privately owned and Madison County had to pay rent for our library branch to be there. The lease expired, and the owners did not want to sell or renew, so the Friends of the Hot Springs Library took it upon themselves to find a new, permanent space for the Hot Springs Library.
They found the perfect spot in the heart of downtown, on the Appalachian Trail. The Friends made the decision to buy the building and began a fundraising journey to pay down the debt. Residents and visitors rallied together, and the Friends have received both small and large donations from individuals, community organizations, local businesses, and county organizations. Some of our community members, organizations and businesses have given multiple donations. In August 2021, after raising over $350,000, the Friends achieved their goal to pay off the principal on the mortgage and handed the deed over to Madison County government.
