Bamboo Hearth Broom Workshop at Woodson Branch Nature School

Bamboo Hearth Broom Workshop
April 27th, Sunday, 1-5 PM
$65 for the class + $30 Materials fee
Make your own beautiful hearth broom! In this workshop participants will design and make a plaited and stitched hearth broom with a 2-3 foot stick handle using traditional broom corn stalks, bamboo, recycled cotton cord, and natural dried floral materials. Hearth brooms are similar to full sized sweepers, but with a slightly smaller sweeping head and a shorter handle. Larger than a whisk broom yet lighter and more wieldy than a full sized sweeper, hearth brooms are great for sweeping up dust, dirt, ashes, crumbs, and cobwebs. They make excellent housewarming, wedding, or special occasion gifts. This class is open to total beginners as well as professional crafters. Scholarship spots are available to people of the global majority (PGM) and folks who have been displaced by Hurricane Helene, including artists who have been displaced from their studio spaces.
Age limit: 15+ or with special permission of instructor. This class will exercise upper body muscles and will require use of both feet and hands while seated. There is a minimum of three participants in order to hold this event and a maximum of ten participants.
